"Gran, when I go, keep your eyes on me! Don't look at anyone else. That way no one will be able to come between us. " Yana 1973
In Paris, the dancer and actress Yana Maizal stages dance performances telling stories of political refugees. Born in Leningrad in the 1960s, she emigrated to Canada with her family to escape the Soviet regime and the gulag. Now, Yana uses her experience to work with others who have escaped from war. By organizing workshops that have their roots in flamenco and theatre, she works with survivors to poetically weave together the threads of their stories. The memory of her own exile is outlined through these artistic encounters.
Yanochka is a film that is inhabited by the memory of a journey that evolves over a lifetime, one that leaves an everlasting imprint.
